Communication: Technical and Business Writing
I write technical and business documents. For example:
- brochures, newsletters and service catalogues
- articles, press-releases, and presentation scripts
- formal requests for information, requests for proposal
- evaluations, recommendations and business cases
- training and software user guides
- online help systems
I write with the education, skill and experience needed to convert complex issues into accurate and clear information that you, your clients and audience can rely on for solid, well-informed decision making.
Accessibility: Information Design
Good information design must overcome two challenges:
- to create clear and consistent information that supports logical, appropriate and powerful action
- to present information in ways that make it easy for your audience to read, understand and use
My education, experience and technical skills overcome both of these challenges.
-
I can create accessible documents and web sites that conform to Web Accessibility Initiative Guidelines.
-
I can design and set up standardized document collections of all types—project documentation, course ware, manuals, proposals, presentations and management reports.
-
I can design and produce layout intensive publications such as newsletters and catalogs.
-
In addition, I can design structured information systems for content re-use, single-sourcing and multi-purposing. To do this, I introduce XML Technologies: DTDs, XSLT, XSL-FO , CSS, and the DocBook specification.
If you are unfamiliar with these acronyms and want to understand their potential, consider one of my introductory content and information management presentations on DocInSite.
Process: Information Management Consulting
Specialized methodologies and technologies are needed to truly understand and realize complex information publishing opportunities. I created DocInSite to fill this need.
DocInSite:
-
is a framework for identifying essential content and process components in your information inventory and authoring processes.
-
comprises concepts and tools covering all facets of information management.
-
is most useful when your information must be published accurately, repeatedly and rapidly to multiple media, for example, to print and the web.
-
ensures only essential activities are part of your work load; DocInSite Life-cycle analyses highlight each step toward managing a high performance, low cost and measurably effective information publishing system.
Creativity: Photography & Digital Imaging
Every document contains images. Images contribute meaning and visual appeal. So the pages on this site rely on images. I create each and every image on this site, whether photograph, photo derivative or digital.
Sometimes words are the focus, sometimes images; in both cases, my goal is maximum synergy between the two—creativity married to accessible communication through efficient processes.
